Query Builder for Mortality ICD-10 Query Module for Utah Counties and Local Health Districts - Crude Rates, Deaths Per 100,000 Population

Overview

Overview

The mortality data in this IBIS-Q query module have been derived from death certificates in participation with the National Vital Statistics System, and are maintained and provided by the Utah Department of Health, Office of Vital Records. They include virtually all deaths of Utah residents, regardless of where the death occurred. The causes of death were coded using International Classification of Diseases (ICD) codes.

Getting Started

Follow the steps to narrow your query and display your results. When you are done forming your query, click "Submit" bottom of the screen (last step) to get your query result.
Step 1: Select year (Single Years, 2006) Step 2: Select cause of death (NCHS 50 Leading Causes)

Cause of Death

There are a variety of predefined causes of death to choose from. If causes on the predefined lists do not meet your needs, you may enter your own ICD codes by selecting, (User-defined causes.)
First choose a coding scheme to use for causes of death. Default is all NCHS 50 leading causes.

NCHS Leading Causes of Death

The National Center for Health Statistics (NCHS) has developed a uniform procedure for ranking cause of death. Using the International Classification of Diseases (ICD) coding structure, 113 selected causes of death were consolidated from the entire ICD coding structure. Of these 113 causes a subset of 50 rankable causes were selected to rank deaths for individuals older than one year of age. A subset of 71 rankable causes of death was selected for infant deaths. The rankings denote the most frequently occurring cause of death among causes eligible for ranking. See the help page on the left Navigation for a listing.

How to Specify ICD Codes

Enter the codes, use a hyphen to indicate a range of codes, use a space or comma between codes.

For ICD-10 codes: P23 includes all codes under P23 (congenital pneumonia), from P23.0 (Congenital pneumonia due to viral agent) to P23.9 (Congenital pneumonia, unspecified). Because the codes are alpha-numeric and not simply numeric, deaths coded simply (P23) will not be included in a range from P23.0-P23.9. P23-P24 would include all codes under P23 and P24.

For ICD-9 codes: 480 includes all codes under 480 (viral pneumonia), from 480.0 (Pneumonia due to adenovirus) to 480.9 (Viral pneumonia, unspecified). Deaths coded simply 480 will not be included in a range from 480.0-480.9. 480-481 would include all codes under 480 and 481.

For ICD-9 Injury codes: Codes 800 and higher are injury codes. They are referred to as E-codes. To specify E-codes type in the numbers WITHOUT the E. For example: Adverse Effects of Medical Procedures and Care are codes E870-E879. When entering these codes type 870-879.

Step 3: Select age of decedent (Age Adjustment Age Groups)

First choose a coding scheme to use for age groups. Default is age adjustment age groups, all ages.

Age adjustment age groups (less than 1, 1-4, 5-14, 15-24, 25-34, 35-44, 45-54, 55-64, 65-74, 75-84, 85+)
Four age groups (0-14,15-44,45-64,65+)
Seven age groups (0, 1-14, 15-24, 25-44, 45-64, 65-84, 85+)
Eight age groups (0-17, 18-24,25-34, 35-44, 45-54, 55-64, 65-74, 75+)
5-year age groups (0-4, 5-9, 10-14, 15-19, 20-24, 25-29, 30-34, 35-39, 40-44, 45-49, 50-54, 55-59, 60-64, 65-69, 70-74, 75-79, 80-84, 85+)

How to Specify Age Groups

Enter whole numbers from 0 to 999.

Use a hyphen to indicate a range of ages (e.g., "5-8" will includes ages 5, 6, 7, and 8).

You may use greater than (>) and less than(<) symbols. An entry of (<1) yields all infants age 0 through 364 days.

You may use a plus sign (+) to indicate all ages equal to or greater than (e.g.,"85+" yields all those aged 85 and over).
Enter custom age group

Step 4: Select sex

Would you like to include only males or only females in the results? Default includes both sexes.

Both Male and Female
Male
Female
Step 5: Select geographic area (Local Health District)

Utah Resident Deaths

For Utah public health assessment, typically only Utah residents are included in analyses of death data.

Death records for Utah residents who died while they were visiting outside the state are included in the Utah death dataset. Interstate exchange of vital records takes place between all 50 U.S. states and territories as part of the National Vital Statistics System (NVSS).
First choose a geography type. Default is all Utah residents, regardless of place of death.

Local health district
County
Step 6: Select how to display the results

Use the drop down list options below to specify how to display the numerical data values on the query results page. If both a Row Values Grouped By and a Column Values Grouped By are specified, then a two dimensional table will be presented in the query results. Regardless of what is selected, a standard data list table will be presented as well as meta data that describes the data sources, data issues, and any data notes. Select the Chart Graphic Type option below if you want a chart graphic to be shown.
Specify how to display the numerical data values.
