Indicator Profile of Motor Vehicle Crash Injury Emergency Department Visits

Why Is This Important?

Motor vehicle crashes (MVCs) are the second leading cause of injury emergency department (ED) visits in Utah, trailing only falls. In an average year, more than 30,100 people will visit the ED due to MVCs, resulting in charges of over $52 million per year.

Definition

The number of outpatient emergency department encounters for Motor Vehicle Crash Injuries per 100,000 persons in the population. This may include persons who died as a result of their injuries.

How We Calculated the Rates

Numerator: The number of emergency department encounters for Motor Vehicle Crash Injuries.
Denominator: The number of persons in the population of reference.
