Indicator Profile of Firearm-related Emergency Department VisitsWhy Is This Important?From 1999-2005, firearm-related injuries accounted for over 400 emergency department visits per year in Utah. Of these, 67.2% were due to unintentional firearm injuries, 17.7% were due to assault, 10.1% were due to self-inflicted injuries, 3.1% were undetermined, and 1.9% were due to other causes.For the years 1999-2006, firearms were involved in an average of 213 deaths annually. Of these deaths, 83.0% were due to suicide and 13.7% were due to homicide. From 1999-2006, firearm-related injuries accounted for approximately 100 hospitalizations per year in Utah. Of these hospitalizations, 37.2% were due to assault, 34.2% were due to unintentional firearm injuries, 22.5% were self-inflicted, 2.8% were undetermined, and 3.2% were due to other causes.
