Indicator Profile of Domestic Violence-related Fatalities

Why Is This Important?

Domestic violence is the leading cause of injury and homicide for women in the United States. It is defined as a pattern of behavior used to establish power and control over another person through fear and intimidation, often including the threat or use of violence. It occurs across all ethnic, racial, religious, educational, age and socioeconomic groups. The 2000-2002 Domestic Violence Fatalities in Utah Report indicated that there were 167 adult homicides, and 53 of those (31.7%) were related to domestic violence. There are 16 domestic violence shelters that provide services in Utah. From July 2003 to June 2004, the Division of Child and Family Services (DCFS) reported that 5,471 men, women, and children received services and 1,592 families requesting shelter were referred to other communities because their local shelters were full.

In 2005, DCFS investigated 4,628 allegations of domestic violence. Furthermore, data from the Utah Violent Death Reporting System revealed that in 2005, there were 65 domestic violence-related fatalities in Utah. This data includes homicides and suicides. The 2005 Youth Risk Behavior Surveillance System reports that 9.7% of Utah's high school students have experienced dating violence. Domestic violence is an issue that affects individuals, families, and communities, and more resources are needed to prevent further occurrences of domestic violence in Utah.
