Indicator Profile of Arthritis Prevalence

Why Is This Important?

Arthritis is highly prevalent among U.S. adults, the leading cause of disability, and associated with substantial activity limitation, work disability, and reduced quality of life. Findings from the National Health Interview Survey (2003, 2005) indicated than an estimated 21.6% of the adult U.S. population (46.4 million persons) reported arthritis, and 8.8% (18.9 million) had arthritis-attributable activity limitations. Almost 41% (19 million) of the 46 million adults report limitations in their usual activities due to their arthritis. In addition to activity limitations, 31% or 8.2 million working age adults (18-64) with arthritis report being limited in work activities due to arthritis.

Responses of "Don't know/Not sure," those who "Refused" to answer, and "Missing" responses were excluded.
Denominator: Number of survey respondents aged 18 and older excluding responses of "Don't know/Not sure," those who "Refused" to answer, and "Missing" responses.
