Indicator Profile of Arthritis and Depression

Why Is This Important?

Having a chronic illness such as arthritis may contribute to depression. Data from the 2007 Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System revealed that 25.5 percent of persons with arthritis reported seven or more days of poor mental health in the last 30 days.

Definition

Individuals who report doctor-diagnosed arthritis and seven or more days when their mental health was not good during the past 30 days are considered to have arthritis and depression.

How We Calculated the Rates

Numerator: Number of survey respondents who reported doctor-diagnosed arthritis, and seven or more days when their mental health was not good in the past 30 days. Responses of "Don't know/Not sure" or "Refused" and those with "Missing" responses were excluded.
Denominator: Total number of respondents who reported a doctor or other health care professional that they had some form of arthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, gout, lupus, or fibromyalgia excluding responses of "Don't know/Not Sure" or "Refused" and those with "Missing.
