Why Is This Important?

Public health is concerned with threats to health based on the analysis of health and related measures in populations. Knowing the numbers of people in a population is important to understanding the need for public health and related services. These numbers are also needed for calculating rates of the many important measures of the public's health. Population projections help in planning for future public health needs.

How Are We Doing?

Today the world is experiencing its most rapid population growth in history. In the United States, total population increased by almost 10 percent between 2000 and 2010. Growth patterns varied widely across the country.
