Complete Health Indicator Report of Marriage and Divorce

Number of marriages and number of divorces per 1,000 persons.

Number of marriages and/or number of divorces.

Number of persons in population.

Why Is This Important?

Marriage and divorce are important determinants of the social structure of a population, which affects its health status. Marriage and divorce rates are simply the number of marriages (or divorces) per 1,000 persons in the population.

How Are We Doing?

The Utah marriage rate has experienced a fairly consistent downward trend since the year 2002. The Utah marriage rate was 8.1 in 2015. The all-time low was 7.5 (per thousand persons) in 2014; and since the year 2000, the high was 10.9 in 2001. The average rate for the period 1990-1999 was 10.88; the high was 11.2 in 1990, and the low was 10.6 in 1998. The Utah divorce rate was 3.6 in 2015, and the rate stays fairly consistent with a general downward trend over the past 25 years with an average rate of 4.1. From 1990 to 2015 the high was 5.2 in 1990 and the low was 3.2 in 2013.

How Do We Compare With the U.S.?

Over the past 25 years, Utah marriage rates have been much higher than U.S. rates, but the gap is closing. The Utah marriage rate was 8.1 (per thousand persons) and the U.S. rate was 6.9 in the year 2015. The 2015 Utah marriage rate is 17.4 percent higher than the U.S. However, the Utah marriage rate was 25 percent higher than the U.S. in 2010. The Utah marriage rate has experienced a significant downward trend since the year 2002. There can be significant updates to marriage data and caution should be used when interpreting it specifically. Utah and U.S. divorce rates have followed a similar and very gradual decline over the past 25 years. The Utah and U.S. divorce rates were both 3.4 in 2012, and both went down in 2013. In 2015, the Utah rate was 3.6 while the U.S. rate was 3.1. The Utah divorce rate is generally equal to or higher than that of the U.S. From 1999 to 2011, the Utah rate consistently trended a little above the U.S. rate.
